Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) flips the script on traditional therapy by spending less time digging into what's wrong and more time building on what's already working. Instead of analyzing the problem, the history, or all the reasons you're stuck, SFT asks: What do you want? What's already going well, even a little? And what would it look like if things were better? It's future-oriented, practical, and efficient—designed to help you identify your strengths, clarify your goals, and take small, concrete steps toward the life you're trying to build. For people who don't want to spend months unpacking the past or who need results quickly, SFT offers a no-nonsense path forward. It's particularly useful when you're dealing with specific, solvable problems—relationship conflict, work stress, motivation issues, or feeling stuck in a rut.

The research shows SFT is effective for a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and workplace stress. It's been used successfully in schools, hospitals, and with first responders who need tools that work fast and don't require a lot of backstory. The techniques—like the "miracle question" (if your problem disappeared overnight, what would be different?) and scaling questions (on a scale of 1 to 10, where are you now and what would move you up one point?)—help you get clear on what you actually want and what small changes can get you there. SFT respects that you're the expert on your own life and that you've already survived hard things. The therapist's job is to help you notice what's working and do more of it.
Â
What makes SFT appealing, especially for those in demanding roles or those with stressful, complex lives, is its efficiency and respect for your time. Sessions are often shorter-term, sometimes just a handful of meetings, because the focus is on solutions, not symptoms. It doesn't require you to relive trauma or dissect every painful detail—it assumes you're capable, resourceful, and already have some of the answers. SFT is therapy that gets out of your way and helps you move forward without the fluff. It's about building momentum, one small win at a time, until the problem that brought you in doesn't have the same grip anymore.
